Barbara Murakami lives in Düsseldorf/Germany. She is a special needs teacher, Shiatsu teacher and trained in psychosynthesis, focusing and clean language. One of her main focuses is to bring Shiatsu to a wider audience and to the margins of society. She therefore enjoys treating people with disabilities and children, and she also shares her experience in training courses with professionals who work with these groups of people. She has published the book ‘Shiatsu – Space for Encounter’, which is dedicated to shaping the shared space between the practitioner and the client in Shiatsu.
Every Tuesday I give shiatsu to disabled adults in a place, where they work within their limitations. They are spastic, paralyzed, mentally disabled, epileptic and/or autistic.
The treatments are less about healing physical problems and more about self-awareness, attention, acceptance, encounter and joy. They rarely take place on a mat, but rather in the client’s familiar surroundings, – in a wheelchair, on a bench, on a chair… And it’s not so much about meridians and points, but rather the quality of touch. The clients really look forward to the treatments and wait for me every Tuesday. Some of the staff have also become interested in Shiatsu and have attended my seminars on Shiatsu with disabled people. Some of them also came for treatments.
